One hundredth of a Schilling, the Groschen. The name of a large medieval silver coin, meaning 'thick denarius', was revived in the twentieth century for the smallest bronze coin of the republic. The coin's face is of a simple design, showing only the denomination and the year, in contrast to the name's distinguished origin. A name can belong to something great or something small—tangible proof for the chapter on the stratigraphy of names.
