  1. The English Rothschilds interests in gold were further consolidated in 1852 when they acquired the lease of the Royal Mint Refinery
  2. After the Californian rush of 1849 came the Australian fields in the 1850s followed by the South African discoveries in 1884
  3. In 1884, Alfred de Rothschild (1842-1918), a younger brother of Nathaniel, 1st Lord Rothschild, had acquired from the Metropolitan Board of Works a freehold plot in Cartwright Street, off Royal Mint Street
