A Roman brass coin, worth one-quarter of a denarius. Daily accounts were reckoned in this unit. Pliny recorded the amount of silver flowing to India in sestertii.

⚠ It survived longer as a 'unit of account' than as a physical coin. It has the character of a currency that exists within account books.
