In 794, Charlemagne decreed that 240 deniers were to be struck from one livre of silver. One livre was 20 sous, and one sou was 12 deniers. The only physical coin was the denier; the higher-ranking sou and livre were units of account used in bookkeeping.

Until the end of the 18th century, French finances were calculated in this unit. The expenditure for the American War of Independence was 1.3 billion livres, and the Assignat was created as an interest-bearing bond with a face value of 400 million livres.

⚠ In some educational materials, the spelling 'livre' is also used. It refers to the same thing, and the name is connected to the Latin word 'libra', meaning scales.
