A religious precept requiring literacy for males. In economic history, it is considered a key to the hypothesis explaining occupational transitions.

A 2012 book on economic history suggested that the key to how a farming people from the year 70 became urban dwellers in crafts, commerce, lending, and medicine by 1492 lies in a requirement for literacy established about 2000 years ago. ⚠ This is a hypothesis, not an established theory. It should be read alongside the explanation of this transition being forced by the prohibition of usury.
