Kariage

Moneylenders of the Kamakura period. Gokenin vassals would borrow money by pawning their domains or armor.

If they could not repay, their ancestral lands passed into other hands. From 1239, the shogunate repeatedly issued laws forbidding kariage from seizing the domains of gokenin, but these were ineffective (from the "Sea Routes of Coinage" stop, "Coinage of Kamakura"). The pattern of the lending business becoming concentrated in the hands of specific groups, who are then resented, is also present here.
