The division of a single currency area by means of banknotes.

The division of a single currency area into multiple areas by stamping banknotes or exchanging them for new issues. The successor states after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary are a classic example, forming a parallel to the later dissolution of the ruble zone.

⚠ It is technically more difficult to dissolve a currency union than to create one.
