A title given to merchants entrusted with a monarch's finances and procurement. The founder of the Rothschild family obtained it in 1769.

Mayer Amschel Rothschild gained the patronage of the Crown Prince of Hesse-Kassel through his trade in old coins and obtained this title in 1769 (according to the family archives). The trust of the monarch, who believed in his catalogue of old coins, became the gateway to his expansion into financial services.
