Claims Supported by This Source

  1. Soldiers complained that their bodies and lives were valued at ten asses a day (1.17). In the soldiers' own words, this rate calculated over 365 days does not match the recorded annual pay of 225 denarii (explained by Speidel; original text not obtained).
  2. It is uncertain whether the great fire was accidental or caused by the emperor's malice (15.38). The year is identified by the consuls in 15.33; the fire broke out on July 19 (15.41).
