Policyholder Protection System Q&A Q14: What are policy reserves?

Life Insurance Policyholders Protection Corporation of Japan.

Claims Supported by This Source

  1. Policy reserves are funds accumulated from premiums and investment income to prepare for future payments of insurance claims, annuities, and benefits, and their accumulation is mandated by the Insurance Business Act.
  2. Unlike deposits and savings, a portion of the paid premiums is used for claim payments and policy maintenance costs, with the remainder being set aside as policy reserves. Therefore, policy reserves are generally less than the total amount of premiums paid.
  3. It is not that 90% of the insurance claims, annuities, etc., are covered.
