Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836)

1. Born in Frankfurt on September 16, 1777. Moved to England in 1798, worked as a textile merchant in Manchester, and established Rothschild Brothers in 1799. He turned his initial capital of £20,000 into £60,000.
2. Founded N M Rothschild at New Court in 1809. The temporary management of funds for Wilhelm IX of Hesse-Kassel expanded the scope of his London operations.
3. "By 1814, Nathan was in a position to fulfil contracts for the British government to purchase and transport gold coin to fund Wellington's armies on the continent. After the victory at Waterloo, the London house secured further contracts to handle the payment of British subsidies to its allies."
4. Issued 26 British and foreign government loans between 1818 and 1835. In 1824, he co-founded Alliance Assurance, and in 1826, he supported the Bank of England by supplying it with gold.
5. Died in Frankfurt on July 28, 1836. His will instructed his sons to seek the advice of his wife, Hannah.
