- On November 6, 1945 (Shōwa 20), GHQ announced that the headquarters of the four major zaibatsu—Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, and Yasuda—would "voluntarily" dissolve.
- The Holding Company Liquidation Commission was established in August 1946 (Shōwa 21). Designated companies and zaibatsu families transferred their shares to the commission, and payment was made in government bonds.
- Of the 83 designated companies, 42 were dissolved and 41 continued to exist.
- The Holding Company Liquidation Commission gave priority to selling the shares it received to employees, officers, and local affiliates of the issuing companies.
