Study on the payment attitudes of consumers in the euro area (SPACE) – 2024

Claims Supported by This Source

  1. In 2024, cash accounted for 52% of point-of-sale (POS) payments by number of transactions in the euro area (59% in 2022, 72% in 2019, 79% in 2016).
  2. By value, cards accounted for 45% and cash for 39% of point-of-sale payments.
  3. In 2024, cash was the most used means of payment at the point of sale in 14 out of 20 countries. The share of cash transactions by number ranged from 22% in the Netherlands and 27% in Finland to 64% in Slovenia and 67% in Malta.
  4. Those aged 65 and over made 57% of their point-of-sale payments in cash, while those under 40 made less than 50%.
  5. In 2024, when paying in stores, 55% prefer non-cash methods like cards, 22% prefer cash, and 23% have no preference.
  6. Of daily payments, 75% are at points of sale, 4% are person-to-person, and 21% are online (online was 17% in 2022).
  7. 87% of consumers find it easy to go to an ATM or bank, and 93% have a payment account (91% in 2022).
