News Translation Ledger — Translating "Rate Hike" for Households

Where does a one-line "rate hike" announcement hit your wallet?

When to use The day a central bank's decision made the news.

Headline

"BOJ Hikes Rates," "Policy Rate Raised." The headline is a single line. We will translate this line into its mechanism and the pathways to your household finances.

Mechanism

On March 19, 2024, the Bank of Japan reviewed its monetary policy framework. The decision statement reads that it judged that a virtuous cycle between wages and prices had been confirmed and that the 2% price stability target would be achieved in a sustainable and stable manner. The policy rate is a target for the uncollateralized overnight call rate, the interest rate at which banks lend to each other overnight. What the central bank raises or lowers is this interbank rate, not the interest rate on your deposits or loans itself.

Pathways to households

When interbank interest rates move, banks review deposit and lending rates. For depositors, this works to increase deposit rates. For borrowers, it works to increase repayment amounts for variable-rate loans. For prices, raising rates works to suppress demand. The three pathways move simultaneously, and the direction of the effect is opposite for different people.

In your own case

Is your household budget more on the depositing side or the borrowing side? If you have a variable-rate loan, you can see the difference in amount by entering an annual interest rate increased by 1 point into the "Monthly Repayment Amount" calculator.

Procedure

  1. Place the headline in the structureWhich interest rate, who moved it, and how
  2. Write the three pathwaysDeposits, Loans, Prices
  3. Determine your sideDepositor or borrower
  4. Convert to an amountEnter your own numbers into the calculator

In other countries

Both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank adjust short-term interbank interest rates. The three pathways to households are the same, regardless of the country.
