Spade money

Warring States period ・ bronze ・ 4th century BC ・ Han (the Three Jin)

Spade money(obverse)
Gary Todd / CC0(Wikimedia Commons)

Bronze money copying the shape of a spade. It circulated chiefly among the Three Jin — Han, Wei and Zhao. The piece shown is the one whose museum label reads 'Lushi Bainie, Warring States, Han', and the name of the casting place is cut on its face. Lands of the knife and lands of the spade: the shape of money mirrored what each land lived by.
