A 5 Yen note from the Dai-Ichi Bank, Ltd., dated 1904. The portrait is of the bank's president, Shibusawa Eiichi. With the currency reform of 1905, the Dai-Ichi Bank notes were officially recognized as legal tender, and the notes of a private bank effectively became central bank notes. The face of a private bank's president appearing on the legal tender of another country is a rare case in numismatic history.
