A 50 Kronen note from 1914, the year the war began. On the reverse, the denomination is listed in the various languages of the Empire—German, Magyar, Czech, Polish, and more. The multi-ethnic empire was multi-ethnic even in how it inscribed its denominations. Behind the stillness of this paper, the wartime increase in issuance was about to begin.
