The one rupee of 1947. Composition nickel, diameter 28 mm, weight 11.8 g, mintage 159,939,000. Obverse engraved by Percy Metcalfe, reverse by P. W. M. Brindley. The reverse features a Bengal tiger, and the denomination is written in three languages: English, Hindi, and Urdu. The dot below the year is the mint mark for the Bombay Mint. Silver was finally removed from the rupee coin. Four hundred years after its standard was set by Sher Shah, the unit continued on, having lost its intrinsic metal.
