Half Tanga of Portuguese India

A half tanga from Portuguese India, 1903, King Carlos I. The specifications are: bronze, diameter 30.3 mm, thickness 2.2 mm, weight 12.38 grams, Lisbon Mint, mintage of 800,000, with Valancio Alves recorded as the engraver. The obverse inscription reads CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL MCMIII, and the reverse INDIA PORTUGUEZA ½ TANGA. The name "tanga" is derived from the "tanka" of the Delhi Sultanate. At a time when British territory covered most of the subcontinent, the monetary unit of Goa still retained this name.
