A one rupee silver coin from British India, dated 1918. At the end of the First World War, the price of silver bullion soared globally. If the value of the silver content exceeded the face value, coins were melted down and returned to bullion. During this period, India was positioned to send funds to the mother country to finance the war. The subcontinent, which had long been an absorber of silver, began to have it drawn out. This reversal began around the year this silver coin was struck.
