1 Anna (1945)
1945 ・ nickel ・ 20th century ・ British India

A one anna from 1945. The obverse legend reads GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR—"King and Emperor". These six words proclaim the system in which the British monarch also served as the Emperor of India. In the final year of World War II, silver had already disappeared from the subcontinent's small-denomination coins. Coins bearing this legend would be issued for only two more years. This small coin carried with it the last few years of the title of Emperor.
