Swedish plate money (10 Daler)

A plate-shaped copper coin struck by Sweden, a major copper producer. The weight of the copper plate corresponded directly to its face value. The largest pieces were so heavy that an adult could barely carry one, and a sledge was needed instead of a purse. The Russian plate money, or "plata," produced in Yekaterinburg from 1725, was based on this system. This piece is a foreign coin, displayed here as the model for its Russian counterpart.
