A 960 réis silver coin of the Brazilian Emperor Pedro I, 1825. The obverse shows '960' within a wreath and the inscription of the emperor's title; the reverse shows a crown and shield with the words IN HOC SIGNO VINCES. In 1824, the London house issued a Brazilian 5% government bond. The archives note that in the early days of independence, Nathan's house became the main banker for the Brazilian government, and this bond allowed Brazil to buy its independence from Portugal. Independence was decided not only by fighting but also by payment. The 1824 bond certificate and scrip remain in the archives. This is a silver coin of the independent empire, struck the following year.
