Solidus of Constantine
AD 310–313 ・ gold ・ 4th century ・ Trier
Seventy-two coins to a pound of gold. This plain, sturdy design of about 4.5 grams remained the anchor currency of the Mediterranean world for more than seven hundred years, earning the name "the dollar of the Middle Ages". Born at the end of the century of debasement, it is among the longest-lived gold coins in monetary history. This piece was struck at Trier.
