Genovino gold coin
1337–1344 ・ gold ・ 14th century ・ Genoa
In 1252 Genoa and Florence resumed gold coinage almost together—the first true gold in Western Europe for some four and a half centuries. What is engraved is not a king but the city gate. This piece is a fourteenth-century striking; gold amassed by maritime trade travelled the Mediterranean under a city's name.
