The Portuguese national side of the 2-euro coin bears the royal seal of 1144 of Afonso Henriques, the first king, ringed by seven castles and five shields. On a currency whose interest rates and exchange rate are no longer set at home, the country placed the seal of its oldest king. The unit was given up; the story was not.
