Denarius
BC 211– ・ silver ・ 3rd century BC ・ Roman Republic

Rome's standard silver coin, born in the middle of the Second Punic War. The board of three moneyers (tresviri monetales) in charge of the issue cut the myths and achievements of their own houses into the imagery — the coin was the first mass medium. Later, under the empire, the fineness of the silver went down.
