During the era of the Low Countries' division, the Count of Holland held his own minting rights and struck groats. The unified stuiver of 1433 was also introduced in this county.

In 1572, the cities of Holland and Zeeland sided with the Prince of Orange, and in 1579 they joined the Union of Utrecht. They struck the silver leeuwendaalder (lion dollar) in 1575, and the first one-gulden silver coin in 1680.

⚠ It was Holland's public credit—the ability to borrow war funds instantly at a low interest rate—that sustained the country through the Disaster Year and dispatched the fleet for the Glorious Revolution. In 1810, that interest was reduced to one-third.
