Joseph Eckhel (1737-1798) and his numismatic network — FWF project P25282

Claims Supported by This Source

  1. Eckhel was a professor of classics at the University of Vienna and director of the Imperial Cabinet of Coins and Antiquities.
  2. His "Doctrina numorum veterum" in 8 volumes (Vienna 1792-1798) methodologically reshaped the study of ancient coins and has in some respects never been superseded.
  3. The founding father of numismatic science.
  4. 162 scholarly letters to Eckhel from 38 European classicists and collectors are preserved in the archives of the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. 5 letters are located abroad, and 85 are in Eckhel's own hand.
