Rothschild, Nathan Meyer — Dictionary of National Biography, vol. 49(1897)

Dictionary of National Biography (London: Smith, Elder, 1897; no author name listed) — transcription on Wikisource.

Claims Supported by This Source

  1. The father, Mayer Amschel's, business was "a small bank and money-changing business, combined with a dealership in general goods and antiques," and the Landgrave "bought many works of art from him." He became a court agent in 1801 and provided 20 million francs to the Danish government in 1803.
  2. Nathan went to England in 1797 and was naturalized on June 12, 1804. He participated in the East India Company's gold auctions, acted as an agent for government payments of foreign subsidies, handled remittances to Wellington during the Peninsular War, and managed payments to the allies under the Treaty of Töplitz in 1813.
  3. States (with the reservation "seems to have been") that "an agent named Roworth waited for the result at Ostend, obtained an early edition of the Dutch official gazette, crossed the Channel, and was the first to inform London early on the morning of June 20. The government did not believe it, confirmed it through another source on the afternoon of the 20th, and Major Percy's official dispatch arrived the next day." Cites *Notes and Queries* to state that "the story of Rothschild himself carrying the news, holding it exclusively for a long time, and making large trades is mythical."
  4. States that he "long maintained" a network of couriers and a system of carrier pigeons.
  5. £12 million British government loan in 1819. Reportedly lost £500,000 on the 3.5% conversion of Vansittart's Exchequer bills. £15 million for the 1835 slave owner compensation.
  6. Bibliographical note: "No authentic record of Nathan and the family exists, and the published accounts are full of inaccuracies. Reeves 1887 is poor in information and uncritical, relying mainly on the obituary in the *Gentleman's Magazine* of 1836 and on Picciotto."
