- The most recent recession began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009.
- The unemployment rate in December 2007 was 5.0%, having been below that level for the previous 30 months. At the end of the recession in June 2009, it was 9.5%. It then peaked at 10.0% in October 2009. The last time the rate exceeded 10.0% was from September 1982 to June 1983 (peak 10.8%).
- Job openings peaked at 4.8 million in March 2007 and fell by 44% during the recession. Nonfarm employment peaked at 138 million in January 2008 and fell by 5% during the recession.
